چکیده

This paper considers prediction intervals for a future observation in the context of mixed linear models. For such prediction problems, it is reasonable to assume that the future observation is independent of the current ones. Our approach is distribution-free, that is, we do not assume that the distributions of the random effects and errors are normal or specified up to a finite number of parameters. We show that for standard mixed linear models, a simple method based on the (regression) residuals works well for constructing prediction intervals. For nonstandard mixed linear models, however, a more complicated method may have to be used, based on estimation of the distribution of the random effects. Simulation studies compare prediction intervals based on the ordinary least squares estimators and those based on the empirical best linear unbiased estimators. We apply the method to a data set regarding lead contamination of soil.

Parametric Bootstrap Approximation to the Distribution of Eblup and Related Prediction Intervals in Linear Mixed Models

Empirical best linear unbiased prediction (EBLUP) method uses a linear mixed model in combining information from different sources of information. This method is particularly useful in small area problems. The variability of an EBLUP is traditionally measured by the mean squared prediction error (MSPE), and interval estimates are generally constructed using estimates of the MSPE. Such methods h...

Bayesian Prediction Intervals under Bivariate Truncated Generalized Cauchy Distribution

Ateya and Madhagi (2011) introduced a multivariate form of truncated generalized Cauchy distribution (TGCD), which introduced by Ateya and Al-Hussaini (2007). The multivariate version of (TGCD) is denoted by (MVTGCD). Among the features of this form are that subvectors and conditional subvectors of random vectors, distributed according to this distribution, have the same form of distribution ...

Neural network sieve bootstrap prediction intervals for hydrological time series

When analyzing time series data, the estimation of forecast intervals, based on an observed sample path of the process, is a key issue. If the process is linear and the distribution of the error process is known, the methodology is well developed but, for departures from the true underlying distribution, the prediction intervals perform poorly. In this latter case several distribution free alte...
